Spice Village - 4* Dlx (CGH), Thekaddy (Kerala)

Address: Spice Village, Kumily Road, Thekkady, Idukki, Kerala, India - 685536

Spice Village is located in the Periyar wilderness, high in the western ghats of Kerala. For centuries, the area attracted voyagers and adventurers, mercenaries and empire builder’s kings and merchant princes.

The people are drawn not only by the lure of spices, but by the romance and wild beauty of the land. The Portuguese and the Jews of Cochin visited as traders, turning the natural bounties of the area into wealth. Pepper and cardamom, cinnamon and ginger, nutmeg, mace and anise the Periyar hills became nature's taste factory in the 14th century, as Cochin became nature's harbour, the port of lading for a spice-hungry world. Spice Village is 1.4 km from KSRTC Bus Depot. It is 108 km from Kottayam Railway Station and 190 km from Cochin International Airport & 145 km from Madurai Airport.

You can choose from 52 individual, tribal-styled thatch-roof cottages with verandahs. Each cottage is luxuriously furnished and spotlessly clean, with attached baths.

The Village offers many other facilities, including a conference hall and games room, complete with table tennis, caroms and chess boards, and a floodlit outdoor badminton court. The highlight, though, is the garden itself, bursting with a rich array of spice trees. Each plant is carefully marked and there is a botanist at hand to answer any question. The design of each cottage was inspired by the native tribesmen of Periyar, the Oorali and Mannan, who lived in similar dwellings. In fact, one of the cottages currently being used as an office is an original tribal hut which has been modified.

Everything comes from within a 50 mile radius of the resort. Locally sourced food not only benefits the local communities, it also helps us reduce our carbon footprint in transportation. Of course, a good bit of the food comes from more like 50 yards away. Our vegetables are grown in house at our organic farms. And fish comes in fresh from the river. But the real magic in Spice Village cuisine comes from - you guessed it - fresh spices.

Accommodation

- Standard Villas

- Deluxe Villas

Both kinds of cottages at Spice Village are inspired and created from the local designs and materials. Elephants grass abundantly available in the Periyar Tiger Reserve is used as the roofing for these wooden cottages and it's an interesting experience to observe the local craftsmen when they rethatch the cottages.
